Your Easy Guide to Choosing Shower Enclosures and Shower Cabins

It can be very exciting to update your bathrooms with new fittings, fixtures, and even some brand-new, modern shower enclosures or shower cabins! Making up your mind can be difficult, as an impressive range is available to choose from, and the large variety of different types and styles can leave one feeling a little bewildered. You will find large walk-in showers, wet rooms, smaller shower cabins, showers with swinging doors, shower cabins with sliding doors, and shower baths, and they all come with their own pros and cons. It is good to have some sort of guide or reference to help you make an informed choice. Remember that, once the shower has been installed, it will probably be there for quite a while, and it has to be easy to live with and nice to look at while still making the best of the space that has been allocated to it!

Here are some guidelines you may want to follow when choosing the right shower for your bathroom:

  • How much space is available in the bathroom? The type and size of shower you choose will largely be determined by the amount of space that is available for it. If there is a lot of space, a walk-in shower may be your preferred option but, if space is at a premium and you prefer an enclosed shower that is easy to install, you may want to consider a small, pre-made shower cabin. Shower cabins can easily be made beforehand, and there are usually some of these available “off the shelf” from a good bathroom supplier. The door can also be an issue – a swing door will work well if there is space for it to open and close, otherwise a sliding door is recommended. The side to which a swinging or sliding door opens can also be an issue, so ensure that the door opens to the correct side! If space is really tight, you may want to consider turning the bathroom into a wet room by combining the shower with the whole bathroom, or with a larger section of the bathroom.

  • Position of the shower: Deciding which part of the bathroom to allocate to the shower enclosure can be difficult, and good bathroom planning is required. The help of a professional may be needed in order to find new and creative solutions to your bathroom layout challenges. The position of the shower will dictate which type and style of shower you need and, of course, the plumbing has to be in position. If you are installing a new shower in the place of an old one, you may be able to use the existing plumbing, which can save money and time.

  • The type of enclosure material: Many shower enclosures are glass, but some shower cabins are made of high-quality Perspex or other hardy materials that are easy to clean and just as attractive as glass. Tempered glass can provide privacy, while still letting in light, and safety glass is highly recommended for all showers and wet rooms where all the surfaces tend to be wet a lot of the time. It is also best to get glass that is edge protected – this protects the edges of the glass from chips and nicks. The framing around the doors should also provide adequate protection and support for the glass in the shower cabin and shower door.

  • Do you need a shower tray? There are a lot of beautiful showers that do not need shower trays, but often a shower tray is the best option, as it limits the spilling of water into the bathroom. Shower cabins with trays are typically made to fit shower doors, which means that the doors seal better and prevent water from escaping from the shower and tray. It is advisable to choose shower cabins that already have a door attached for the best results.

  • Tiles or no tiles? A shower does not have to be tiled. If you look at the variety of shower cabins available at GEZA, you will find that there are shower cabins that are fully enclosed, which means that they can be installed without the hassle of tiling. Because our range of shower cabins already includes a tray, it is also not necessary to tile the bottom of the shower to make it more waterproof.
