How Prefabs can Enable Kitchen Renovations on a Budget

Kitchen renovations are required from time to time as a household’s needs change. If there is one room in a home that can be accurately described as its heart, it is the one in which we cook and, in many cases, eat most of our meals. It is where children often like to congregate and watch their parents at work, often lured by the enticing aroma of cookies baking in the oven or a pot of hearty meat and vegetable stew simmering on the hob. However, it is also a specialised workshop, a room equipped with all the necessary appliances and storage space for crockery, cutlery, pots and pans.

The Ideal Solution for Budget and Space Restrictions

While the heart of some homes may be larger than others, space can often be a concern. Today, housing prices prevent many young people from purchasing or even renting their own homes. Many are forced to continue living with their parents and share the cooking facilities even after they are married and have children of their own. Extending a room can be an expensive project. Furthermore, it can involve a long period of disruption and dining on takeaway burgers and fries. However, when kitchen renovations are essential but the available space and budget are limited, prefabricated units could be the perfect solution.

Most appliances are sold as free-standing units, which can be somewhat restrictive when you need to equip a comparatively small cooking and dining area from scratch. A combined refrigerator and freezer might be helpful as it offers a smaller footprint than two separate units. It is surprising, therefore, that most manufacturers haven’t developed other similar space-saving solutions for other appliances when furnishing a small space or conducting kitchen renovations. As a  long-established innovator, South Africa’s GEZA Home was the first to recognise this previously neglected but valid requirement, especially in light of the trend by developers to build cheaper and correspondingly smaller homes.

GEZA Maxi Kitchen Unit - Kitchen Renovations

GEZA’s Innovative Combined Prefabricated Units

When supplied individually, a stove, sink, and fridge could have a collective footprint of around two metres or more. By contrast, GEZA has developed two products that combine all three essential appliances into a single white melamine unit with a width of just one to 1,5 metres. The smaller mini unit is ideal for inexpensive kitchen renovations when space is at a premium. The sink features a swivel mixer tap with a goose-neck spout and may be positioned on the right or left of the unit as desired. Beneath the sink, a roomy melamine cupboard with a hinged door has one fixed and one adjustable shelf to provide necessary storage space. The dual-ring electric hob sits next to the sink and above a 120-litre fridge with a freezer compartment. In the maxi version, a useful draining board is positioned centrally, above the refrigerator, with a storage cupboard on either side.

When undertaking kitchen renovations, one often needs to be a little more flexible, adjusting the choice of furnishings according to the shape of the room and the available floor space. With such considerations foremost in mind, GEZA has developed some alternative prefabricated combinations. Between them, there is sure to be a unit that will meet the needs of most homeowners whose choices are limited by a lack of space, an irregularly shaped room or the exorbitantly high prices of most other branded goods.

When planning a kitchen renovation, a microwave often ranks high on a busy family’s list of needs. However, some dishes are still best prepared on a hob. For them, GEZA offers an alternative version of its 1,5-metre wide maxi unit. The draining board, the fridge beneath the sink and the double electric hob remain unchanged, but part of the cupboard space beneath the latter houses a 20- or 23-litre microwave oven. Optionally, this unit can also be supplied without the refrigerator.

Going Off the Grid in Your Kitchen

South Africans have lost patience with load shedding. When planning kitchen renovations, many are changing to gas. To assist them, GEZA has assembled another variant of the maxi unit in which the electric hob is replaced by a two-plate gas hob next to the sink and draining board. The standard model has three cupboards, but the central one can be replaced with a fridge on request.

While prioritising affordability and functionality, visual appeal and durability remain cornerstones of our design policy. We invite you to discover more about world-class GEZA products, including our range of innovative, compact, affordable prefabricated units designed to simplify your kitchen renovations.
