6 Kitchen Design Tips for Small Kitchens That You Can Implement on a Budget

Small kitchens are a challenge to renovate. As the heart of the home, we need our kitchens to look and feel inviting – but compact spaces do not always allow for statement design pieces. Thankfully, introducing style is entirely possible – but you need to know how to go about it. At GEZA, we have over 19 years of experience in the affordable housing market, and we know a thing or two about useful kitchen design tips. So, if your space is tight, and your budget even tighter, have a look at some of our inspired ideas on how to transform cramped kitchens.

1. Start Off with Your Canvas. Strip back your cabinets, appliances, and counters and what is left? The floor and walls. Think of these two surfaces as your starting canvas from which to work. Replacing your floors altogether may be costly, but some flooring solutions such as luxury vinyl planks work wonderfully in small kitchens. For your floors, stick to neutral flooring that won’t distract from the overall look. Keep walls lighter in colour and stick to pastels and creams if you wish to avoid stark white altogether. Lighter shades allow the room to look and feel more spacious.

2. Introduce a Splash of Colour. One of the best design tips you can carry with you into any room is to select a colour palette. Such a palette can contain four to five colours – such as white, grey, blue, and charcoal – that all complement each other and work well in a small space. These colours can then be incorporated into appliances, tablecloths, curtains, and any décor. The right colours will be calming, welcoming, and add life to your kitchen.

3. Update Your Appliances. Your grandmother’s hand-me-down microwave might not add to the aesthetic you are looking to create, so updating your appliances over a few months is a way to save money and introduce items of better quality to your kitchen. Kettles, toasters, and even fridges are all easy to match in shades like white, silver, or black. For small kitchens, look for compact appliances that don’t draw the eye too much, as the room’s focus should be more on its overall aesthetic appeal.

4. Replace Your Lighting Fixtures. When searching for design tips online, you will find that most home-improvement and décor websites mention light fixtures. This is because new lights really do transform a small room without taking up any functional space. Whether you want low hanging lights, delicate designs, or something bold and unique, your light fixtures of choice will add a lot of character to your kitchen.

5. Don’t Forget Your Window Dressings. Some kitchens have windows, which provide an excellent opportunity to introduce some functional design. Some tips for window dressings we recommend include adding light, stylish curtains, or trendy blinds. While curtains may allow a space to look homier, be careful not to choose a fabric that is bulky and makes the room seem smaller. Shades, on the other hand, work well with a sleek and modern kitchen.

6. Install New Kitchen Units. Finding counters, cabinets, sinks, fridges, and stoves to match one look is no small feat. Doing this wrong can, in fact, create a chaotic look where all you really want is seamless integration. No matter how many design tips for small kitchens you implement, you still need a functional space that looks good. Fortunately, at GEZA, we have the perfect solution for you. Our experience with small kitchens goes back to 1999 when we began supplying and installing a unique range of beautiful kitchen units. Our units are available in various colours and styles and will work for a room of just about any size. We not only use floor space but wall height as well – which means you have ample space to work and store food or kitchenware.

We hope our kitchen design tips for small spaces have inspired you – but if you find any difficulty implementing these tips, why not speak to us? We invite you to show us your ideas and we will advise you on products in our range that will suit your needs. For more information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us today.

Before You Buy, Check Out the Kitchen Sink for Sale in Johannesburg at GEZA!

If you are looking to upgrade a kitchen or to build a new one, GEZA is the place to approach. We know that there are many different types of basins on the market, and we always aim to provide the perfect sink that will fulfil your needs. We also specialise in smaller kitchens, and provide hardy and durable products that will suit the needs of our customers just perfectly. Types of basins on the market currently include the following:

Farmhouse Sink: Usually these are larger and constructed of porcelain with an underlay. While they are a pleasure to use, the porcelain or ceramic basin can be rather hard on glassware. So, if you use a lot of fine wine glasses, chances are that these are likely to get chipped or broken against the hard surface of the kitchen sink.

Undermount Sink: These are quite popular to use in Johannesburg. They are built into the counter, and therefore provide a virtually seamless look between the counter and the basin. While highly practical and very attractive, they are also made or covered with ceramics, which again is likely to chip fine glassware. On the other hand, they are highly durable and will last for a very long time, despite frequent use. It is necessary to check how heavy the basin is because these are commonly installed with a glue fitting, and if the sink is too heavy, the glue installation will not last very long.

Stainless Steel Kitchen Sink: One of the most popular basin installations in Johannesburg (especially in small spaces) is the stainless-steel sink. They are light (compared to ceramic kitchen basins) and the surface is not as hard as a ceramic surface. The chances, therefore, to break sensitive glassware are reduced vastly. They are usually divided into groups according to their thickness. This means that the heavier stainless-steel sinks for sale in Johannesburg will be cheaper than the sheer thin types available. They are, however, a little noisier, but will not easily break or chip your glassware or crockery.

Corner Basin: This is a relatively new invention and is not always for sale everywhere. It consists of two basins set into the corner of the kitchen, and is specifically designed to save space. They are typically made of metal, and offer a great solution to kitchens that are smaller, but need to be highly functional.

Granite Sink: Basically, granite composite materials are used to make a kitchen sink through a process where crushed granite is mixed with resin. These are highly reliable, long lasting, and also very resistant to chipping and stains. This kitchen sink can be found for sale in Johannesburg, and is specifically created to add style combined with durability, and they are a very modern choice for most homeowners. They are, however, rather heavy, and need additional support in the base to remain in place.

Cast Iron Kitchen Sink: The shape of the basin is first cast in hot iron and cooled down, and then baked with a porcelain coating (much like ceramic kitchen basins). This coating seals the basin with a glossy coating that is very attractive and sleek. They are typically for sale to use in vintage interiors or farmhouse-style kitchens. Cast iron, however, is very heavy, and significant extra support is needed to keep them in place. Because of the ceramic coating and the hardness of the iron, delicate glassware and crockery can be damaged when using this type of basin in Johannesburg or anywhere else. Abrasive cleaners and scrubbing can also spoil the smooth surface of the ceramic coating.

Top-Mounted, Stainless-Steel Basin: Few of the materials used to make basins for sale in Johannesburg or anywhere else are as practical and easy to use as a top-mounted basin. Stainless steel is best to use because it is easy to clean, less likely to be abraded by harsh chemicals and scrubbing, and because they are softer on the glasses and crockery, they are less prone to causing damage.

8 Savvy Ideas to Maximise Your Storage and Kitchen Cupboards for Small Spaces

Small does not have to mean second-rate! If you have a small kitchen space, there is no need to get into a frazzle about a shortage of storage. All you have to do is to be brave, get creative, and use some good-looking cupboards for small spaces! You can have a practical, fully functional kitchen and love the value it adds to your home. There are endless ideas out there to try. so, to make the most of the limited room you have available, we provide a few great ideas that will turn your small kitchen into a smart and cosy little haven.

1. Use wall space creatively. Cupboards built for small spaces often do not have enough room for everything you need. This means that you have to find alternative means to add more storage. One great idea is to use the walls for storage. Repurpose an old rake and hang it upside down on the wall. You can hang your utensils from the fork teeth with spaces in between. This can provide a nice, rustic look and ensures easy access to all the utensils you need.
2. Store behind the door. If the room has a door, you could fit shallow racks behind the door for spice bottles and condiments. This can provide ample storage for those smaller items that you usually struggle to find and that usually hide in the back of your If you find that the door makes the space look smaller, you can remove the door and build a condiment rack against a wall above the stove.
3. The mighty magazine rack. Cutting boards and bakeware such as muffin tins and baking plates tend to consume a lot of space. Use a magazine rack to store these in an upright position and you will not have to spend any time extricating them from underneath other items.
4. Cool and clever cupboards. Invest in a range of cupboards especially created for tiny spaces. These are easy to find at GEZA. We specialise in the provision of smart, space-saving furniture concepts. We also have a kitchen range that can be installed quickly and easily to provide you with the ultimate storage solutions.
5. Lighten the load of lids: Lids for pots and pans can take up a lot of room. Instead of storing them on top of the pot or pan, rather store the pots and pans on top or inside each other. You can then build a lid rack on the inside of your cupboards using very shallow shelves or by attaching tension rods.
6. Shoe-bag shelves. Hang a shoe bag on the side of your fridge or on a wall. You can then store smaller items in the shoe bags. Ideally, the shoe bag should be transparent, so that you can see the contents of the bag. This makes locating small objects such as toothpicks or screws easy.
7. Shower-rack storage. Purchase wire or aluminium shower racks with plastic suckers at your nearest DIY shop. Stick them against the side of the fridge or inside your cupboards for extra storage. They are ideal for the lighter items but remember, the suckers will only work on non-porous surfaces.
8. Eye-level storage solutions. In addition to your kitchen cupboards for small spaces, add more cupboards at eye level. This provides storage that is easy to access, even in a small kitchen!

4 Good Reasons to Buy Free-Standing Kitchen Units Instead Of Built-in Units

Revamping your home? Need a new kitchen for an office or home, or any other type of residence? If the answer is yes, you will probably need to get good looking, practical, and highly functional kitchen units. The question is whether you should go with a fully installed kitchen with built-in units, or whether you should rather buy free-standing kitchen units. There are, of course, benefits to both, but choosing to buy free-standing kitchen units provides you with benefits that built-in units cannot.

It is not that common to see freestanding kitchen units anymore, but a few decades ago, it was very common for all kitchen units to be freestanding and fully movable. At the time, the only built-in part of the kitchen was the sink, because it needed to be connected to suitable plumbing. Later, freestanding kitchen units became unfashionable, and people started choosing built-in units over freestanding units.

It does seem, however, that this trend is reversing, and it is not unusual to find newly built homes or revamped kitchens that contain freestanding units nowadays. It seems that the practicalities and flexibility of the freestanding kitchen unit is being rediscovered – only with a twist. Nowadays, new advances, materials, and clever design make them a lot more attractive and practical than before!

If you choose to buy free-standing kitchen units, you will be able to benefit from the following:

• Flexibility: You can change your kitchen configuration if you need to. Sometimes, a new fridge or stove may require some extra space, and being able to move your freestanding units around to make space, or to reconfigure the layout of the kitchen to accommodate new appliances or implements can be very important.

• Easy to Clean: When you buy free-standing kitchen units, you will find that it is a lot easier to clean underneath them, because they are elevated from the ground. They can also be moved in order to get to the spaces behind and underneath the units, and this provides you with better control over the hygiene in your kitchen.

• Good Looks: Because free-standing kitchen units are slightly elevated off the ground (they usually stand on feet), they can provide a free-floating look that is lighter and easier on the eye than bulky built-in units.

• Easy Installation: Built-in units can take ages to install and cost a fortune. If you buy free-standing kitchen units, you will just have to provide the relevant measurements and choose the finishes and colours you want. The units are then either delivered in kit form and put together in the kitchen, or can be delivered as full units that just need to be placed in the correct positions.

If you want to buy free-standing kitchen units that are not only great looking, but also highly durable and practical, speak to our team at GEZA. We will be only too pleased to show you our great range of kitchen and bathroom units!

8 Space-Savings Tips for A Practical Kitchen Sink And Storage Units for Smaller Kitchens

Compact living is required in smaller spaces such as temporary housing, small residences or apartments, and tented accommodation for holidaymakers. The kitchen is the heart of the property, because this is where food is cooked, dishes are washed, and everything to do with food and its preparation is stored. Not only must there be enough room to move comfortably while cooking, but washing all the crockery, cutlery, and cookware must be done properly and there must be enough storage for everything. Therefore, it is important to choose right when it comes to a kitchen sink and storage units for smaller kitchens! Choosing well will avoid countertops cluttered with stuff that has nowhere to go. Clever storage ideas are needed when it comes to storage solutions. If you are looking for a kitchen sink and storage units for your small kitchen, consider the following:

1. Choose one sink instead of two: Usually, sinks come in pairs – one for washing and one for rinsing. A double sink takes up a lot of space. Installing just one kitchen sink saves space; you can always employ the use of a plastic basin for rinsing after washing.

2. Use the space under the sink: Yes, there are pipes underneath it, but if the kitchen sink and storage units are designed and installed to save space, you can still make the most of the space under the sink.

3. Use wall-mounted storage: Bare walls in kitchens are the ideal for storage solutions like wall-mounted racks. Install storage units against the wall above your work surfaces to free up extra storage space.

4. Use an open-plan space: Between some open-plan kitchens and dining rooms there is space for a storage unit or an isle to demarcate the division between the two areas and provide extra workspace and storage. It can also serve as a handy breakfast bar or dining nook with chairs on the outside of the storage isle on the dining room’s side. This will turn the kitchen into a more practical and comfortable space and people can sit at the storage unit and eat or just chat to the person preparing the food in the kitchen.

5. Make the kitchen sink and storage units deeper: If your kitchen sink is too shallow, you cannot do many dishes at a time, with a deeper sink you will be able to do a lot more dishes in less time. You will also not have as many dirty dishes taking up space and this is more hygienic. When it comes to storage units, in certain areas you can install deeper units; for instance, next to the fridge or on both sides of the fridge. A fridge is usually higher than the storage units it stands next to, so matching the height of the fridge will create a neat, straight line – and more kitchen storage space.

6. Choose smaller appliances: Just because you don’t have space for a large stove or refrigerator, or a dual sink, doesn’t mean that your kitchen has to be less functional and practical than a larger kitchen. If you choose appliances that are compact yet powerful, such as induction cooking plates, you will find that you are able to prepare food just as effectively as you can on a large stove.

7. Put a hanging rack on the wall: If you need extra space for your cloths or even your pots and pans, you can install a hook beam against the wall above the kitchen sink and storage units where you can hang anything from dishcloths to pots and pans, and even cooking implements like large spoons, sieves, a colander, and other essential kitchen equipment.

8. Keep hardware small: In a small kitchen, it is easy to bump into door and cupboard handles and drawers. Ensure that anything that sticks out is small and rounded to avoid painful knocks and bruises.

The best approach to kitchen sink and storage units for your small kitchen is to make saving space or increasing storage space in a practical way an art. At GEZA, we can help you choose the best kitchen sink and storage units for your space. Give us a call today to find out more!

Why You Should Choose A Kitchen Steel Sink for Your Kitchen

When choosing a sink for your kitchen, you will notice that there are many different types of sinks. There is a wide variety of kitchen sinks on the market, all made from different materials, and they range in size, shape, depth, and cost. Some people prefer porcelain sinks, while others may prefer a steel kitchen sink. You have to make a wise choice when it comes to choosing your kitchen sink, as the sink can not only add to or detract from your kitchen’s appearance, but the sink’s practicality while it is being used is also very important.

Types of Kitchen Sinks

• Cast-iron sink: Also known as the farmhouse-style sink, these are typically quite large, and the apron of the sink extends over the edge of the unit below. They are available in single- and dual-bowl designs and have become more popular of late, with people preferring their clean lines and the stylish yet rustic look of the non-porous finish. These basins are typically quite deep and made to clean a lot of dishes at once for large families. They are very tough, but can be very hard on dishes and glass, which can chip or break easily against the hard surface of this type of kitchen sink if not handled carefully.

• Stainless-steel kitchen sink: These sinks are very popular in smaller homes and a very practical solution for small kitchens, because they are lightweight and come in many different compact forms. There are many classifications of steel kitchen sinks, usually divided into categories according to the thickness of the stainless steel. A thicker gauge of steel will usually be cheaper, yet heavier, and a thin sink will be lighter but more expensive. They do not pose much danger to crockery, because the steel is quite yielding and therefore forgiving, but they do tend to be noisier to use than cast-iron sinks. They are, however, easier to clean, they are highly durable, and they do not stain or rust. These advantages make them one of the most practical choices on the market, especially in kitchens that get used heavily.

• Granite sink: These kitchen sinks are created by crushing granite and fusing it together with resin under great pressure. These kitchen sinks are highly durable and very stylish; therefore, they are also very popular in homes with minimalist designs and modern kitchens. They are very sound-absorbent but also very heavy and need extra support to carry the weight after installation.

• Ceramic or fireclay sink: Constructed from clay and baked at high temperatures, they look very similar to farmhouse or cast-iron kitchen sinks, but they are more durable, and less likely to chip or stain. They are, however, very expensive and can be hard on crockery and glass.

• Fibreglass kitchen sink: Made of lightweight fibreglass, these kitchen sinks may appear similar to ceramic sinks, but they are much lighter and unfortunately do not last as long. However, they are easy and cheap to install and come in a wider variety of colours and finishes than other typical kitchen sinks.

Why You Should Choose A Kitchen Steel Sink Instead

The most popular choice for many is the typical steel kitchen sink. These sinks are very practical, are easy to install, do not rust, and do not get damaged even during heavy use. Often, kitchen sinks made of steel are installed in professional kitchens because they are durable, easy to clean, and can deal with the abrasive cleaners used for extra hygiene. They can also deal with high temperatures and do not stain. Because stainless steel is one of the best options for anything that is constantly exposed to moisture, they are very practical to use in a variety of different environments, especially when it comes to buildings or housing where cost or compact installations are important. They can be designed in lots of different sizes and look attractive with their shiny stainless-steel finish. If you want a steel kitchen sink, you can choose between a single basin with a drying rack, double basins with or without a drying rack, or just a double-sink unit.

At GEZA, we encourage those with small properties to choose a steel kitchen sink because of its practical applications, ease of installation, and durability. For more information, give our experienced team a call today

Tired Of High Small Kitchen Cupboard Prices? Come to GEZA For Cost-Effective Solutions!

Because residential areas are becoming increasingly overcrowded in South Africa, and homes are becoming much more expensive, there are now a lot of property developers that specialise in building starter homes or apartments that will provide first-time home owners with a chance to get their foot on the property ladder.

Unfortunately, the affordable apartments often come with small kitchens and bathrooms, and real creativity has to be applied to make these as practical and easy to use as possible. Small kitchen cupboard prices have reached an all-time high, and if you are looking to kit out a small kitchen or bathroom, you have to look around to find the best supplier for these items.

At GEZA, we specialise in making small spaces as practical and comfortable as possible. We offer solutions with services that you will be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. We love small spaces, and we have spent years developing our craft in order to make these spaces as functional and easy to live in as possible. At first, we started with temporary accommodation that included cabins and container homes. We focused on designing highly practical layouts and components for these small living spaces that were often shared by a number of people. We have developed specialised shower cubicles, bathroom furniture, and small kitchen furniture that can be installed in an instant, and be useable within hours.

We also focused on affordability, and this is why a lot of our clients now include a number of property developers and other clients wanting to make the best of small spaces. Small kitchen cupboard prices can be very high if you look at the wrong supplier, and as a result, we have created a range of small kitchen cupboards at prices that most people can afford. In addition to small kitchen cupboards at reasonable prices, we also incorporated other components, such as sinks and storage units that fit perfectly into smaller kitchen spaces. We have designed a range of bathroom solutions that include a vanity unit, shower cubicle, basins, and storage units at reasonable prices.

One of the biggest advantages of our small kitchen cupboards (in addition to reasonable prices) is that our small kitchen units can be installed within a matter of hours. Our bathroom units are the same. This means that as long as the relevant plumbing is in place, we can literally install a fully functional kitchen and a bathroom within one day. No more tiling, waiting for cement to dry, correcting brickwork, or dealing with other interior matters.

We design and manufacture our small kitchen cupboards and other kitchen components at our site, which are then brought over to the client’s site and installed with no fuss. Often, these units can be removed easily as well (you have to specify what you need), and then, in case you need to move, you can take our small kitchen or bathroom cupboards with you to the new site.

Because we know that small kitchen cupboard prices are prohibitive for a lot of people, we have made it our business to ensure that we can provide fully functional kitchen and bathroom units at very cost-effective prices. This does not mean that we have compromised on the quality of our materials.

If great value is what you are looking for, you will find that our small kitchen cupboard prices are reasonable, and the quality of the units we design and manufacture is right up there with the best in the business. We pride ourselves on our ability to provide a wide range of clients – from massive building developments to individual homes – with outstanding quality products, like our small kitchen cupboards, at cost-effective prices.

If good quality, high functionality, style, and class is what you need for your small bathroom or kitchen, choose GEZA. Our small kitchen cupboard prices and bathroom unit prices are amongst the most competitive you will find in this country. We have been in the business for decades, and we pride ourselves on providing durable and practical bathroom and kitchen solutions. We have designed our products to be aesthetically appealing yet long-lasting, and we make installation and use easy.
